Scanapalooza: QR Codes

Lately I’ve seen QR (quick response) codes popping up everywhere. They are being used as a marketing tool for businesses, ticketing, labeling, and even as wall decorations in the Lab42 office. When scanned on a smartphone, these 2D barcodes can direct you to a website, text or phone number. My colleagues and I at Lab42 wanted to find out if people were just scanning these codes with their eyes or if they were stopping to scan them with their phones. And if they were stopping, what makes certain codes so scan-worthy? In true market research fashion, we decided to gather some quick responses of our own.

Lab42 surveyed 500 Americans over the age of 13 to discover where people saw QR codes, how they were using them, and why they were scanning (or not). Take a look at the infographic below to see the scantastic results:

About the Survey

This survey was conducted online via social networks from July 28 to August 1, 2011 among 500 social media users. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. As a contributor for the Lab42 blog, I get really excited whenever I come across a story about market research in the news. I also love to read about out-of-the-box social media campaigns. I'm currently a senior at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts majoring in Business and International Studies, and I spent last semester studying abroad in Copenhagen. Fun fact: In high school I was a coxswain on my school's rowing team.

  1. Thanks for this valuable research! As we educate our clients on this new technology it’s nice to have additional research on hand.

Fantastic info-graphic! Gorgeous design too, love the eyeballs.

Those of us who are familiar with QR codes understand how awesome they are and the potential they contain as a modern communication medium.

The QRuestion is… (wonh wonh) what are we doing about it? Sharing is a two way street, and right now we’re not being received.

We need to educate the other half: our friends, family, colleagues, clients and customers. we’ve got a message, you just need to SCAN IT!
